TOUR ITINERARY

Friday, March 11, 2011:  Meet today at the airport for your overnight flight to Rome.  Delta Airlines: Orlando, JFK, Rome and return. 

Saint Peter's Basilica - ROME

Saturday, March 12: Rome – After airport formalities, meet your local guide for a  tour of the treasure-packed Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica, the world’s largest church building.  Later, transfer to your hotel for check-in and dinner.  Sleep in Rome for 2 nights at the Hotel Palazzo Carpegna. 

Sunday, March 13: Rome — Join your local guide at the Colosseum for an up-close look at one of Rome’s most famous landmarks.  The Forum is nearby, and you’ll be treated to an in-depth look at life during the time of the Caesars and the Republic.  You’ll have an opportunity to wander through the ruins on Palatine Hill, marvel at the ancient Forum, and even spend some euros with the nearby souvenir vendors.   After lunch we’ll begin our walking tour of Rome’s historic central core visiting the Pantheon and several wonderful churches in the area.  Finally, take a stroll ending at the famous Trevi fountain.  

Il Campo- Siena

Monday, March 14:  Siena —

After breakfast, enjoy a private bus ride on the high-speed autostrada up to Tuscany.  After lunch, arrive in the medieval walled city of Siena.  After checking in at your hotel, enjoy an orientation walking tour of the pedestrian friendly city center.  Siena is known for its Dominical Church dedicated to St. Catherine, the Duomo and Il Campo, the famous town square.  Enjoy an event-free afternoon and evening to do some exploring on your own.  Sleep 1 night in Siena the Hotel Chiusarelli.

Duomo - Florence

Tuesday, March 15:  Florence —Enjoy the ride through Tuscany as we travel from medieval Siena to Florence.  Before you know it you will be knee-deep in the Renaissance!  After settling into our hotel, take a walking tours of Renaissance Florence’s most famous sites.  You’ll visit the Duomo (famous for Brunelleschi’s dome), see the bell tower and baptistery doors, as well as visit several important squares and churches.  Dinner tonight will feature fine Tuscan fare at a nearby restaurant.   Sleep 2 nights in Florence at Hotel Kursaal.

Wednesday, March 16:  Florence— Today’s highlights include a visit to the Galleria Accademia, home of Michelangelo’s David and a guided walking tour of this magnificent Renaissance city.  There will be plenty of opportunities to get out on your own for shopping, another museum, or simply to relax.  

 

Volterra

Thursday,  March 17:  San Gimignano and Volterra —  After breakfast you’ll be on the road again for a short drive to the American WWII Cemetery near Florence. Here, reflect on the ultimate sacrifice given by thousands of American service men while liberating Italy in 1942. Later, travel the backroads of Tuscany enroute to the delightful little hilltown of San Gimignano for our lunch stop. Then it is just a short ride to Volterra, your own little hilltown for the night. Volterra has recently become “famous” for the filming sight of the Twilight movies, but has long been known as a quaint and off-the-beaten-path destination for Tuscan travelers. Sleep in Volterra for 1 night at Albergo Eturia.

Friday, March 18: Back to Rome  –  Enjoy your morning in Volterra! Cappucino, expresso, sticky rolls, shopping and relaxing all are good options. Later, hop on the bus for your trip back to Rome. Tonight, you will have one last opportunity to experience the “big city.” How about a gelato-licking stroll taking in the Pantheon, Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain?   Throw a coin in the fountain for good luck and a certain return trip to the Eternal City. Sleep in Rome 1 night at the Hotel Palazzo Carpegna.

Saturday, March 19: Fly Home — After breakfast we’ll load up one last time and head to the airport. Rest, relax, and remember your tour as you fly home to Florida.

The trip I took with you in Italy in 2007 was fabulous. Loved Volterra, loved Florence, loved the Cinque Terre. What a beautiful place.

And I would be remiss not to mention that fabulous villa we stayed in. Remember the Fourth of July celebration? We spent the day at the pool and then you fixed us the most delicious dinner. And we had fireworks! It was one of the most memorable Fourth in my life!
