Throughout the day, I have received emails from folks who have traveled with me to the Cinque Terre. The flooding has evidently ruined much of the western Cinque Terre.
Here is a link to a website that promotes tourism in the Liguria. Its front page shows the total destruction of the harbor of Vernazza.

Three weeks ago we were sunning ourselves on the large rock to the left of the archway in the picture and swimming in the warm, clear water of the harbor below and to the left of the yellow house in the picture, all under beautiful blue skies and tempitures in the mid 80′s.
The devastation that I see now in this perfect picture postcard village is heartbreaking. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people as are our hopes for a complete recovery of the area.
Thank you very much for sharing our info about the flood.
The situation here is dramatic. Above all in Vernazza and Monterosso but, unfortunately, not only: also the towns of Levanto (on the coast) and of Brugnato and Borghetto (in the inland) are hardly damaged. The same scenery in the north of Tuscany.
We’re preparing other articles about the flood on our blog.
Thanks again for sharing.
My heart was saddened by the news of the flooding in the Cinque Terre. I have visited there several times with David- once spending a week there. I have spent many hours in the harbor on the “infamous” rock- sunning and just hanging out with good friends and have many happy memories of the Cinque Terre. I will say a special prayer tonight for all of those that have been touched by this flooding in Italy.
Denis, thank you for the on-site updates. I hope to meet you in person the next time I visit the Cinque Terre.
Mick, Yes, I know the exact “rock” to which you refer. My wife and I visit for a week or two every year and “claim” that rock as our sunning bed. It is so sad, but the locals there are a tough bunch. I have every confidence that they will restore the harbor. It is the businesses along the “main drag” that worry me. That water was raging through there!
Wow! Thanks for the tour with your great pics! I didn’t even know this place eiextsd…Now, it’s on my list of places to go! Happy traveling.
